Box Office Battle: 'Tenet' expected to remain #1, other films delay openings

Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.

'TENET' AGAIN EXPECTED TO TAKE TOP SPOT: With another week of no new major film releases, Warner Bros.' (T) time-travel thriller "Tenet," directed by Christopher Nolan and starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki, is expected to once again be this weekend's biggest box office story. The movie, which opened on September 3, is expected to domestically gross ~$3.6M over the weekend.

DISNEY RE-RELEASES EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the "Star Wars" sequel, "The Empire Strikes Back" is returning to select theaters this weekend.

DISNEY ANNOUNCES DELAYED RELEASES OF UPCOMING FILMS: More notable than what is hitting theaters this weekend is what won't be hitting theaters as soon as had been expected. Disney's (DIS) Marvel superhero movie "Black Widow," starring Scarlett Johansson, was delayed from November 6 until May 7, 2021. The sequel to Kenneth Branagh's "Murder on the Orient Express," "Death on the Nile," was delayed from October 23 to December 18. This pushed the Steven Spielberg musical "West Side Story," which had been slated to open on December 18, out to December 2021. However, Disney did leave the Pixar title "Soul" in place for a November 20 theatrical release.

WEEKEND FORECAST:

  1. Tenet - $3.6M
  2. Break the Silence: The Movie - $1.3M
  3. The New Mutants - $1.3M
  4. Unhinged - $1.1M
  5. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back - $1M

Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK), Lionsgate (LGF.A, LGF.B), Sony (SNE), and ViacomCBS (VIAC, VIACA).
